Best Time to Visit the Hunter Valley

Autumn and spring — but here is the month-by-month detail.

The Hunter Valley has a warm, humid climate: hot summers with afternoon storms, mild sunny winters with cold nights, and pleasant shoulder seasons. Cellar doors are open all year, so there is no bad time to come. The short answer is March to May and September to November for the best weather, and midweek in winter for the lowest prices and the quietest tastings.

Summer and harvest: December to February

Summer is hot and often humid, with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms. The Hunter’s harvest (known in Australia as vintage) is one of the earliest in the country: picking usually starts in mid-to-late January and runs through February into March. You will see pickers and machines in the vineyards from first light and smell fermenting grapes at the wineries. Plan tastings for the morning and a pool or an air-conditioned lunch for the afternoon. The Christmas Lights Spectacular runs from November to late January.

Autumn: March to May

The best season. Days are warm and settled, nights are cool, and from April the vine leaves turn yellow and red. The new vintage is in the tanks and winemakers have time to talk. Easter and the school holidays are busy, and the Lovedale Long Lunch in May fills the valley for a weekend.

Winter: June to August

Days are usually sunny and mild, but nights can fall close to freezing. This is the season for Shiraz by an open fire, long restaurant lunches and misty balloon flights. A month-long food and wine festival is traditionally held in May and June. Midweek accommodation is at its cheapest, and cellar doors are unhurried.

Spring: September to November

The vines burst into leaf, gardens are in flower and the weather warms quickly. Spring is also peak season for weddings and for outdoor concerts at Hope Estate, Bimbadgen and other wineries — on concert weekends accommodation can sell out months ahead and roads are busy.

Weekends, weekdays and minimum stays

The biggest factor is the day of the week. The Hunter is Sydney’s weekend escape. Saturday nights are the most expensive, many properties insist on a two-night minimum stay at weekends, and popular cellar doors and restaurants are fully booked. From Sunday to Thursday the same room can cost far less, tastings are more personal and tables are easy to get. Note that a few small cellar doors and restaurants close early in the week.

When to book

  • Concert and event weekends: as early as possible — often months ahead.
  • Ordinary weekends: a few weeks ahead for accommodation and dinner.
  • Midweek: a few days is usually enough.
  • Balloon flights: book for your first morning, whatever the season.
