The heart of the wine country, Pokolbin, is about 160 km north of Sydney. Getting there by car is simple; getting there — and around — without one takes more planning, because the cellar doors are spread along country roads with no public transport. For most visitors without a car, a guided tour is the answer.
The options, compared
| From | By car | By public transport | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney (city) | about 2–2.5 h (≈160 km) | Train to Maitland or Singleton, then taxi; 3.5 h or more | Day tour, or self-drive with an overnight stay |
| Sydney Airport | about 2.5 h | Train via Central, as above | Hire car or pre-booked transfer |
| Newcastle | about 1 h (≈60 km) | Hunter Line train to Maitland, then taxi | Tour from Newcastle or self-drive |
| Newcastle Airport | about 1 h | Limited; pre-book a shuttle | Hire car or transfer |
| Central Coast | about 1–1.5 h | Not practical | Self-drive |
By car from Sydney
Cross the Harbour, follow the Pacific Highway or NorthConnex to Wahroonga and join the M1 Pacific Motorway north. From there you have three choices:
- The fast way: stay on the M1 to the end and take the Hunter Expressway (M15), leaving at the Lovedale or Branxton exits for Lovedale and Pokolbin. Almost all motorway.
- The direct way: leave the M1 at the Cessnock exit (Freemans Waterhole) and drive through Cessnock to Pokolbin. Similar time, more country road.
- The scenic way: leave the M1 at Peats Ridge or Calga and follow Tourist Drive 33 through the forest to Wollombi, then on to Cessnock or Broke. Allow 20–30 minutes more.
The M1 itself is toll-free, though some Sydney motorways and tunnels on the way out are tolled. Friday-evening traffic leaving Sydney and Sunday-afternoon traffic returning can add an hour; travel outside those times if you can.
By train
There is no station in Pokolbin. The nearest are Maitland and Singleton, each roughly 30 km from the main cellar doors.
- Sydney to Newcastle: intercity trains on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line run frequently from Central to Newcastle Interchange in roughly 2.5–3 hours.
- Newcastle to Maitland: Hunter Line trains run regularly and take about 35–40 minutes.
- To Singleton: only a few Hunter Line trains a day continue to Singleton, and a small number of long-distance regional trains from Sydney call at Maitland and Singleton.
From either station you need a pre-booked taxi or transfer for the last half hour, and once you arrive you still need a way to get around. Train travel therefore only really makes sense if your accommodation or a local tour operator can collect you. Check timetables on the Transport for NSW trip planner before you rely on a connection.
By guided tour
If you do not have a car, a day tour is by far the easiest way to visit: pickup in central Sydney, three or four tastings, and someone else doing the driving. Compare the tours from Sydney or see our ranked list. From Newcastle there are private and small-group tours too.
By air
- Newcastle Airport (NTL) at Williamtown is the closest, about an hour’s drive from Pokolbin, with flights from several Australian cities.
- Sydney Airport (SYD) is about 2.5 hours away by car and has the full range of international flights.
- Cessnock’s small airfield is used for scenic flights and charters, not scheduled services.
Getting around once you are there
- Local wine tours with accommodation pickup are the most popular solution — see tours.
- Private drivers can be hired by the half or full day to follow your own list of wineries.
- Hop-on hop-off style buses have run on loops around Pokolbin; check whether one is operating on your dates.
- Taxis and rideshare exist but are limited, especially at night. Pre-book.
- Bicycles and e-bikes can be hired in Pokolbin; stick to quieter roads and the Hermitage Road cycleway.
- Driving yourself works if one person in the car is not tasting. The limit is 0.05, with random breath testing.
