Lovedale

The quieter side of the valley

Lovedale lies just east of Pokolbin, between Cessnock and the Hunter Expressway. It is a gentler, greener corner of the valley: narrow lanes such as Lovedale Road and Wilderness Road wind past small vineyards, olive groves, horse paddocks and guesthouses.

The cellar doors here are mostly small and family-run, and the person pouring is often the person who made the wine. Lovedale is also home to one of the valley’s largest golf resorts and to the open paddocks from which many balloon flights take off.

Top things to do: Lovedale

Visit small family cellar doors

Lovedale’s wineries are low-key and personal. Expect short wine lists, unhurried tastings and the chance to talk to the owners. Many open only from Friday to Monday, so check before you set out.

Go to the Lovedale Long Lunch

Each May a group of Lovedale wineries team up with local restaurants for a weekend of food, wine and music spread across the vineyards. It is one of the valley’s most popular events and tickets sell early.

Take off at sunrise

Several balloon operators meet their passengers in or near Lovedale. If you stay here you can roll out of bed and be at the launch site in minutes — see hot-air ballooning.

Taste something other than wine

Cheese makers, olive growers, a chocolate maker and a resort brewery are all in or near Lovedale — see the food and craft drinks guide.
