Why visit the Hunter Valley?

Semillon, Shiraz and two centuries of winemaking

The Hunter Valley lies about 160 km north of Sydney in New South Wales. Vines were first planted here in the 1820s, which makes it the oldest wine region in Australia, and some of its family wineries are now in their fifth and sixth generations.

Today well over a hundred cellar doors are spread around Pokolbin, Lovedale, Mount View and Broke Fordwich, together with resorts, restaurants, cheese and chocolate makers, gardens and golf courses. Most visitors come on a day tour from Sydney. This guide will help you choose the right one — and show you why the valley is at its best when you stay the night, with a balloon at sunrise and kangaroos on the lawn at dusk.

Good to know

Visiting the Hunter Valley: your questions answered

Is the Hunter Valley worth visiting?

Yes. It is the easiest wine region to reach from Sydney, it makes a style of Semillon found nowhere else, and it has excellent restaurants, balloon flights, gardens and wildlife as well as wine. You can compare the best tours here.

How do I get to the Hunter Valley from Sydney?

By car it takes about 2–2.5 hours to Pokolbin on the M1 Pacific Motorway. Trains run only as far as Maitland and Singleton, with no public transport to the cellar doors, so without a car a guided day tour is the easiest option. See our full getting there guide.

How many days do I need in the Hunter Valley?

A day tour from Sydney gives you three or four tastings and lunch. Two days and one or two nights is ideal: a full day of cellar doors, plus a sunrise balloon flight, the gardens and a long lunch.

Do I need to book wine tastings in advance?

Increasingly, yes. Most cellar doors now run seated tastings for a fee and recommend booking, especially on weekends and for groups. On a guided tour the tastings are arranged for you. See how cellar doors work.

Can I drive myself between wineries?

You can, but the driver must stay under the legal blood alcohol limit of 0.05 (zero for learner and provisional drivers), and police carry out random breath tests. A tour or private driver lets everyone taste.
